Disrespectful Students

As a student teacher who is inconsistently in the classroom, maintaining a classroom demeanor that demands respect is very difficult (especially when I am only about 8 years apart from my students…)

I have one student who loves to backtalk only when I am in charge, which sends the class spiraling out of focus. The teachers say I will get a handle on how to handle her when I am there more often, but as for now it is not going well and I feel like 4th Period isn’t learning anything at all.  I know that this is because I have not found a groove yet in maintaining control of the class, and asking for full attention and respect from my students.

Anyone have any advice?

“Educational Hip-Hop”

What has been going well:

I love my students, they love me. I love my assistant, she loves me. I am developing good relationships with families. Teaching is a joy with my class.

I was Staff Member of the week last week. The Literacy coach observed me, loved what I am doing, and asked me to share…

Run-on or Run-off?

  • Me: (to class) Many of your papers are filled with run-on sentences. You're not using proper punctuation, and one sentence will take up nearly an entire page. When I read through these, I don't get a chance to breathe because the sentence goes on, and on, and ON.
  • Student: Wow, someone must really want you dead, Miss At.
